Pinterest has launched a range of new features intended to make the platform more personal – and more profitable.
Follow for pins
The updates were announced in a blog post and include personalised pin and board recommendations based on users' browsing habits.
This means Pinterest will now draw data from websites Pinterest users have visited to suggest relevant content.
“So if you’re planning a party and have gone to lots of party sites recently, we’ll try to suggest boards to make your event a hit,” was the example Pinterest software engineer Ke Chen used.
Users can opt out by selecting a “do not track” feature.
Profiling
Pinterest will now suggest content based on users' location and gender, as well as suggesting pints and boards from users with similar interests.
Tracking
Pinterest isn't the first platform to track its users around the web. Twitter recently revealed it will start employing data from users' browsing habits to deliver custom ads.
Reading between the pins, this update may be the first step towards a similar type of monetised model.
