Micro-blogging site Tumblr has disabled a feature which allowed users to pin content for cash.
The pin drops
Until now Tumblr allowed users to pin content to the top of every follower's dashboard for 24 hours, at the cost of $5.00 per post. The feature was launched in June 2012 as a way to attract more brands to the space.
Another brand-friendly feature, the $2.00 highlight which let users select attention-grabbing phrases, has also been discontinued.
Reclaiming content
In the eight months since launching paid pins have been widely unpopular with Tumblr users. So much so that in January Newsweek brought attention to the failings of the service by posting “You pin, we unfollow.” The post vent viral.
The move shows how delicately formally ad-free platforms must tread when balancing moentisation options with user sentiment.
Instagram recently had to redraft its terms and conditions after a public backlash over new privacy rules.
