Facebook launches Hello for Android users

Facebook's march to own every aspect of your digital real estate continues with Hello, its new Android app intended to replace your handset's default dialler.

Hello is deeply integrated with your Facebook account, and allows you to make calls and send texts through Messenger rather than your phone provider's cellular network.

To lure skeptical users, Facebook has thrown in all sorts of bells and whistles. For example, Hello pulls Caller ID from your Facebook contacts, even if you don't have their phone number.

It also allows you to block numbers that lots of other users have blocked – however these calls still go to voicemail.

Dial it up

In the past Facebook's attempts to woo Android users haven't always gone as planned.

Facebook Home, which attempted to turn the Android home screen into a Facebook content hub, failed to excite users.

However with over half of Facebookers accessing the site from a mobile device and Android outpacing iOS, expect Facebook to keep tinkering until it gets the special sauce right.
