Facebook cracks down on hoaxes

Facebook has launched a crack down on hoaxes and misleading posts in the News Feed.

Truth or dare

Facebook explained the new hardline stance is the result of feedback from users.

"We’ve heard from people that they want to see fewer stories that are hoaxes, or misleading news.

"Today’s update to News Feed reduces the distribution of posts that people have reported as hoaxes and adds an annotation to posts that have received many of these types of reports to warn others on Facebook."

Keep it real

Facebook says it defines a hoax as a form of News Feed spam that includes scams (ie "Click to win" posts) and deliberately false or misleading stories.

However Facebook pointed out that it will not be penalising satirical publications like The Onion, or individual users posting humorous content.

Clean up

Most brands won't be affected by the update, and may even see a rise in engagement from a more
curated and cleaned up News Feed.

Loch Ness watchers beware.
