Number Crunch: Snapchat

While Snapchat might have been the hottest platform of 2014, hard stats are still hard to come by.

After a fair bit of social sleuthing we’ve uncovered the latest facts about the photo sharing site.

Oh snap

Snapchat was first launched in September 2011 by Stanford University students Evan Spiegel, Bobby Murphy, and Reggie Brown.

Fast forward a little over three years and Snapchat now has 100 million active monthly users.

Female friendly

Over these 100 million users, some 70% are women.

In terms of gender divides, this places Snapchat second only to Pinterest, of which over 80% of users are female.

Snap happy, sort of

Snapchatters are a social bunch, sharing over 400 million photos, or snaps, every day.

However the majority of these are shared directly with other users.

Only 12% of snaps are shared with multiple users.

Young at heart

Snapchat remains popular with teens and young adults – over 70% of Snapchat users are under 25 years of age.

While over a third of US teens use the platform.

Brand ambition

Snapchat is slowly moving towards monetisation. After it famously rebuffed Facebook’s US$3 billion offer, it’s now offering brands the opportunity for sponsored posts.

The reported asking price for a day of ads on Snapchat? A cool US$750,000.
