It's been a busy year for Twitter: a spat with Instagram, riding the video wave with Vine and launching a public IPO.
Not content to sit still, Twitter's now experimenting with foreseeing the future.
#magic8ball
The push for social clairvoyance comes courtesy of the @magicstats account, whose slightly mysterious bio reads “I favorite the best tweets I see in real-time.”
As first reported on The Next Web, @magicstats favourites tweets it suspects will go viral.
And it appears to be doing something right. Two of @magicstats recent predictions received over 100 retweets within a few hours.
#trends = #advertising$
While it remains unconfirmed if @magicstats is an official Twitter account, it does bear a striking resemblance to @magicrecs, the official Twitter account that sends users direct messages recommending who to follow.
It makes sense for Twitter to be dabbling its toe in trending tweets – if it gets the equation right there’s no reason Twitter couldn't on-sell this info to its increasing stable of advertisers.
