A few years ago Apple was at the top of its game and it was hard to see any other contender getting close. The iPhone had near market saturation, iPads dominated tablet sales and Apple became bigger than Microsoft and Google combined.
Fast forward two years and Apple's sheen is starting to slip. Steve Jobs has passed away and Apple arguably hasn't release any game changer products since.
Adding to the company's woes is the news that Google is now overtaking Apple when it comes to mobile commerce.
Google Play
According to figures from App Annie, Google Play now accounts for 25 per cent more downloads than the App store.
But more tellingly, Google Play now takes 50 per cent more revenue – that's a 30 per cent increase from the same time last year.
Global markets
The reason for the jump is attributed to Google Play's dominance in BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, India and China). These emerging markets predominantly favour Android.
Brazil recently joined the US, South Korea, India and Russia in the top five Google Play markets.
The takeaway for brands: if you've got an app make sure it's Android ready.
