Earlier this week Austrian daredevil Felix Baumgartner broke four separate world records when he jumped from the edge of space to land in the New Mexico desert.
Today, it's been confirmed that Baumgartner's jump broke another record and is now the most viewed YouTube video of all time, by a space mile.
Jumping for joy
Red Bull, which sponsored the jump, streamed a two hour live feed of Baumgartner's attempt via its YouTube channel, which documented his preparation, three hour ascent and subsequent descent.
YouTube announced on its blog that the space jump broke the record for the “live stream with the most concurrent views ever on YouTube.”
At its peak the video attracted 8 million concurrent live streams, which broke Baumgartner's previous online record of 7.1 million views. The video has so far attracted 367 million views in total.
The record adds to Baumgartner's non-digital records, including the highest jump from a platform (128,100 feet), the longest distance freefall (119,846 feet) and the maximum vertical velocity (833.9 mph or Mach 1.24).
Baumgartner is also the first human to break the sound barrier outside of an aircraft.
One giant leap for video
These stratospheric numbers are good news for Red Bull and YouTube.
Red Bull created and distrubuted the content which has now been viewed countless times around the globe. Red Bull's Facebook page has 31 million fans and is the top five Facebook brands globally, on top of now owning the YouTube channel with the highest ever views.
The BBC are also working on a documentary about the jump.
For YouTube, the benefits might be even greater. When Neil Armstrong walked on the moon 63 years ago, people watched the historic event on television screens.
The fact that this latest milestone was watched by most people online shows that YouTube, and streaming video, have passed their own historic milestone.
