AR ascendant at Facebook and Apple

With the growing popularity of AR, two tech giants are putting their innovation eggs in different baskets as Facebook tests AR ads and Apple releases ARKit 2.0.

Different focuses

Apple’s ARKit is expected to “command a price premium” as it refines new prototype apps for IKEA Place (a furniture placement simulator) and the American Airlines app which overlays real-time flight info.

There are also rumours of a Complete Anatomy app, which lets users participate in lifelike learning of the body in high-definition detail.

The Facebook factor

Meanwhile Facebook is putting its focus on “tap it to try it” type ads, and has already partnered with the likes of Bobbi Brown, Pottery Barn, NYX Professional Makeup, and Wayfair.

To sweeten the AR deal, Facebook is working on a new feature that will allow users to make regular photos 3D which could be a very interesting step in an innovative direction.

Both approaches to AR implementations are sure to develop new monetary strategies and revenue opportunities that could be a standard for ads in the years to come. Until then, we’ll just have to contend with our 2D mobiles.

What do you think about the increased push for 3D advertisements? Do you think AR could be the next big thing for marketers? Give us your thoughts in the comments.
