Facebook is dabbing its proverbial forehead as it takes into account the meaning of being responsible for a quarter of the earth’s population.
A shinier Facebook
Five short years after hitting the billion monthly user milestone, Facebook has doubled that, and is navigating the rocky social waters of responsibility.
A year ago, when Facebook reached the 2 billion mark, Zuckerberg posted “We’re making progress connecting the world, and now let’s bring the world closer together,” finding the company embroiled in scandal shortly after.
Now, compared to YouTube, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, and WeChat numbers, Facebook is nearly lapping the competition, and 17% of its growth is accelerating faster than any other year.
Big blue horizon
It turns out 66% of users are returning every day, up 11% from monthly user ratings when sitting at the 1 billion mark in 2012.
Chief Product Officer Chris Cox says “We’re getting to the scale where we have to get much better about understanding how the product has been used,” speaking to the 2016 US Presidential Election and security leaks earlier this year.
Looking at what fosters fake news, internet addiction, filter bubbles, and more, Facebook is coming to terms with becoming too important to keep business as usual – responsibly speaking.
