YouTube is planning on brining films featuring stars including Susan Sarandon and Eminem to theatres in 2018.
From mobile screen to big screen
The uber popular streaming platform will be making a transition from producing shows and web series as a part of YouTube’s venture into film.
Having already created original content through its Red tier service, YouTube will release Vulture Club; which stars Susan Sarandon as an ER nurse whose son is taken hostage by terrorists.
According to Susanne Daniels, YouTube's Head of Original Content, “…Susan Sarandon’s moving performance immediately drew us into this compelling film.”
Sing for the moment
Vulture Club won’t be the only YouTube-backed film getting a theatrical release. Eminem produced rap-battle satire Bodied recently premiered at Sundance and been picked up by YouTube.
YouTube may be squaring up as a contender to Netflix, but if so, it will be competing against a budget of $8 billion in original programing.
As Hollywood’s geography continues to be reshaped by scandal and an influx of new production houses, we may see a renaissance of original films. At least one can dream.
