A quirky repository for memes is gearing up for a social push, starting with new image-organising options that give users the ability to become content curators.
Curate the internet
Imgur has been around for nearly a decade, but spent most of its life as an unofficial home for Reddit-bound images. Now, it seems to be taking a strategic approach to its independent future.
It's a simple-enough feature to implement: letting users publish ‘favourites folders’. With it, Imgur may be on its way from being a place to dump untested memes to becoming a site that users actually like to spend time.
Lining up a new audience
In an interview with TechCrunch, Imgur founder Alan Schaaf says that the platform is ‘on a path to profitability’ and that the ‘hard work’ of curators ‘could surface the value of Imgur to people who wouldn’t have dug through it post by post’.
The emergence of Imgur as a potential social player positions it in apparent competition with services like Giphy, who have also been making moves.
If Imgur does expand its appeal to new audiences, we might be seeing a more of it in future, including the potential for advertising on the platform.
Imgur is already strong and set to strengthen more—got room in your social strategy for one more?
