Record Video meets with Hangouts

Google has made it super easy to natively save a copy of a video conference/chat session to the cloud.

Yet only enterprise users need apply.

G Suite Enterprise users can now record Hangouts Meet sessions, so long as the Meet organiser is set-up to create recordable sessions.

At the admin level, a system administrator controls which meetings are recordable. Recordability depends on the admin settings of the Meet convener, which can be tweaked at the Organisational Unit level.

The recording function is available to any user who is on the same domain as the authorised Meet organiser. Users will be able to start and stop recording whenever they like.

The file will be saved to a folder in Drive simply called ‘Meet Recordings’.

Single-app applications

Previously, regular punters could record Hangouts sessions, using screen-capture software or combining ‘Hangouts on Air’ with YouTube Live. The G Suite exclusive native recording feature appears to simplify that outmoded process.

This is certainly going to be useful for business. I will provide a straight-from-the-horses-mouth record of proceedings.

It could make for an easy way to share rationales and decision-making processes. People who can’t make an important meeting can use it to catch up with what they missed.

Is G Suite starting to make good business sense, or is Microsoft still king of mainstream enterprise software?
