Google has just announced its video chat product Hangouts will now be available in high definition.
Sweet spot
Hangouts is one of Google's most popular features, and in the past has been used by celebrities including David Beckham and US President Barack Obama.
Now Google is gradually adding HD quality video to Hangouts, but it isn't just a crisper picture that's news here.
The bigger picture
Hangouts is slowly but surely moving towards a plugin-free environment, meaning users can use the service in their browser.
The update also makes it quicker to stream HD video at a lower bit rate, meaning mobile Hangouts will benefit from the new feature.
While this might not sound like a big deal, if Google can get a stronghold into the video chatting space it could potentially threaten rival services like Microsoft's Skype.
Hangouts in HD is gradually being rolled out. To find out more visit plus.google.com.
