Twitter will this week open its first Australian headquarters in Sydney.

The move comes as Twitter expands its influence across the nation. There are now 2 million Australian users and Twitter has partnered with local media organisations and sporting codes since 2012.

Former Google executive Karen Stocks has been named Twitter Australia's managing director.

The move comes as other social heavy hitters expand their reach into Australia.

Google has corporate offices in Sydney, while Facebook and LinkedIn have operated in Australia since 2011 and 2010 respectively.

While a slew of Twitter's advertising options like TV tracking remains exclusive for US-based brands, the recent unlocking of features like Promoted Tweets for local businesses indicates the path is being paved for greater collaboration in the future.
