Google has revealed the fastest growing search terms in Australia for 2011, with celebrities, technology, sport and TV dominating the results.
The most searched term was for an item that does not yet exist: the iPhone 5, while British singer Adele was the highest-ranking person at #5. News events like Cyclone Yasi (#3), the Royal Wedding (#7) and the Rugby World cup (#8) might have been the top news stories on the list, but they were all trumped by Planking at #4.
The results also showed that Australians are still looking for love, with Love ranking the highest in the What is…? category. The nation now has a scientifically proven sweet tooth, with Red velvet cupcakes and Cake pops topping the Food and Drink section, while AFL dominated Sport and Justin Bieber was the most searched term in Google Images.
The findings come courtesy of Google’s Zeitgeist Project, which the company has used for the past 11 years to track global trends in searches. Here is a snapshot into some of Australia’s search habits:
