What’s happening?
According to the Textile, Clothing and Footwear Union, approximately 70% of the workers in the Australian industry are exploited in backyard ‘sweatshop’ conditions.
Raising awareness
In partnership with local manufacturers that do comply with industry standards, government-funded certification organisation, Ethical Clothing Australia, aims to connect consumers with workers via a new website – www.meetyourmaker.org.au
How it works
Using their mobile phone, shoppers scan a code on a product’s label and are linked directly to the worker’s page on the website. The page includes a photo of the worker and bio emphasising their skills, experience and training.
The site also enables shoppers to upload photos of themselves with their purchase, and provides the option (from Monday, 31 October) of simultaneously posting it on their own personal Facebook page.
Good for business?
Aside from the primary goal of increasing awareness about ethical manufacturing, brands are able to promote their ethical credentials through a respected third-party accreditation organisation, while increasing their social media footprint through online word-of-mouth.
