After rocky reviews over location and user data sharing, Snapchat is looking for a better way to bring users back to Snap Map.
A map to success has no shortcuts
Snapchat allows users to share ongoing location data in real-time to friends or have their location requested, which critics worried could be exploitive.
Location sharing for the purpose of intimacy between friends is a slippery slope and not a popular commodity in the wake of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp’s latest scandals in privacy data.
Snap Map started off with a bang, but soured amongst Facebook’s privacy leaks. This resulted in many users opting out of live tracking map features.
Eight Hour Updates
To assuage nervous users out of Ghost Mode, Snap Map is introducing the feature to cancel someone’s access at any time through the Snap Map, which seems like no brainer.
Locations shared through Snap Map will update for eight hours after the app is opened, which means a lot of pinging and location promoting on a night out, so a little extra control is a good thing.
At 19 million daily users, down from 35 million since 2017, Snapchat needs every edge it can get and the new focus on Snap Map is a smart move, until competitors clone that as well.
