When Instagram launched its own video service in June many pundits saw it as the death knell for Vine, Twitter's fledgeling video app.
However, Vine is far from over with recent figures showing it now boasts 40 million registered users.
Growth spurt
Vine announced the news via, appropriately enough, a tweet earlier this week. The figure is a massive jump from the 13 million users Vine had in early June.
While the figures are impressive, they count registered and not active users – in other words those who use the app on a daily or weekly basis.
Social video wars
Since Instagram launched its video service Vine has been involved in a virtual arms race to retain and lure new users. Shortly after Instagram video launched Vine released a slew of new features and has almost constantly been churning out updates.
The strategy appears to have worked, or at least stopped the bleeding.
But before declaring a victor it's worth noting that Instagram had 130 million active users in late July when it first launched video – a figure that's almost certainly much higher today.
