Remember that scene in Back to the Future II where Marty McFly gets power-lacing Nikes and a self-drying jacket? Well, we’re getting one step closer, thanks to Google and Levi's.
No, it’s not a hoverboard (though Lexus is working on it), it’s a jacket that can hail an Uber.
Clothes line
Two years ago Google partnered with Levi’s for Project Jacquard to produce a “smart” jacket that let users control a bunch of smartphone functions through a series of gestures.
Now Project Jacquard is getting an update that lets users connect to the Uber and Lyft apps, and summon a ride via the snap button on the jacket’s arm.
You can also drop a pin on Google Maps to improve accuracy.
But wait, there’s more
Google has also crammed other tech into its bulging jacket. Fashion-conscious tech heads can now access Bose’s Aware Mode.
This works by detecting potential hazards, such as oncoming vehicles and horns, while providing noise reduction with Bose headphones.
While the updates are compelling (and we think the jacket looks quite snappy), sales figures haven’t been released for Project Jacquard, so it’s difficult to judge the public appetite for more heavily connected clothing.
Most importantly, will Project Jacquard be making an appearance in the next James Bond?
