YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki has said the YouTube app is set to update to be more adaptive to users’ screens and alignments.
Dynamic resizing
The app will now support mobile-friendly shapes and aspect ratios. No longer will mobile viewers be expected to conform to desktop standards.
As Wojcicki explains, ‘if you’re watching a vertical, square or horizontal video, the YouTube player will seamlessly adapt itself, filling the screen exactly the way they should.’
Mobile always in mind
Screen-maximised YouTube experiences will definitely appeal to content consumers. They’ll be good for brands too, whose images will be increasingly visible even on smaller-screened mobile devices.
With 1.5 billion logged in viewers watching YouTube watching each month—and each of those spending around an hour a day watching videos their phone—it’s no wonder mobile remains a priority.
Availability
Wojcicki first made public mention of the new app features in late June, stating that the app updates would be available ‘in the coming weeks.’ While that’s certainly not a firm deadline, it signals that we will not be waiting months.
So, keep an eye out for a YouTube app update. This could roll out any day. I'm going to go check again right now…
Is YouTube content better value now that these tweaks give your brand more pixels on the screen?
