Instagram now has an app that works on all devices that run Microsoft’s Windows 10 operating system.
Windows covered
As announced on the official Instagram blog, Windows 10 tablet users—yes, they do exist—can now capture, edit and share photo and video through Instagram directly on their device.
Apple in the cold
The visual content social sharing platform now has genuinely universal app coverage of all android devices and all Windows 10 devices. Coverage is less complete for Apple products.
There is a dedicated Instagram app for the iPhone, but the iPad is still lacking. It’s a gripe that iPad users have had for some time. Despite come commentators labelling the situation a ‘crime against convenience’, there’s no indication that it will be rectified any time soon.
Strategic market coverage?
Instagram’s apparent ignorance of the very-popular iPad indicates they’re not simply targeting the largest customer segments first.
Business Insider points to a commercial partnership between Facebook and Microsoft on gaming projects for Xbox One and Oculus Rift. What this could possibly have to do with Instagram is anybody’s guess.
No touch, no up
The first Instagram app for Windows 10 launched in April, but it was only for phones. Freely available from the Windows App Store, the new incarnation of the Instagram app works on all current-generation Windows devices—including tablets and PCs—but it will not work equally on each one.
Instagram users must have a touch screen to upload content. Therefore, the functionality of the app on many desktops and notebooks will be limited to content consumption rather than creation.
