It turns out there might be too much of a good thing.
Despite Twitter and Facebook rushing to fill our screens with ever-increasing emoji options, new data shows we’re still using the same old ones over and over.
Happy Face
After the recent World Emoji Day, Twitter revealed the most popular emoji over the past year.
The winner was “face with tears of joy”, followed by “smiling face with heart eyes” and “weeping emoji”.
No sign of newer additions such as (incredibly creepy) “clown face” or “Vulcan salute”.
Thumbs up
Perhaps reflecting the nation’s “No Worries” ethos, the most popular tweeted emoji in Australia was “thumbs up”. We shared that honour with Germany.
For the record, Spain preferred “flexing arm”, South Korea “lipstick kiss”, Mexico “praying hands”, and Argentina “musical notes”.
The US, UK, and Canada most often embraced the “grimacing” emoji.
