Live video streaming is leading to polls when it comes to buzzwords this year – with Twitter-owned Periscope and Meerkat slogging it out for top bragging rights.
In an effort to cast a wider video net, Periscope is moving away from Twitter and making it easier for anyone to sign up.
Stream time
Now users can sign up to Periscope using just their phone number. Previously, users had to have a Twitter account. (However Twitter still recommends new Periscope users become tweeters.)
As part of the update Periscope also rolled out several new features, including the ability to change profile pictures without having to go through Twitter, reply to comments and improved blocking functions.
Thumb wrestle
While the move might seem counter-intuitive, it may entice users wanting to dabble in live-streaming – without having to tweet for the privilege.
Keep your eyes peeled for Meerkat's next blow in the live-streaming battle.
