Facebook has significantly increased data security for the Instagram API, in the hopes of compartmentalising further potential leaks.
What’s good for the goose…
Instagram’s parent company is significantly limiting available data associated with approval, regarding access to Facebook’s Events, Groups, and Pages APIs plus Facebook Login.
According to CTO Mike Schroepfer, “Given the scale and sophistication of the activity we’ve seen, we believe most people on Facebook could have had their public profile scraped in this way.”
To combat these “scrapings,” Facebook is changing their account recovery methodology and shutting down its search by username and email features immediately.
Sign of the times
Instagram’s API tracking relationships, follower lists, and public content commenting has already been shut down, much earlier than their schedule date of December this year.
Moving forward, all Events, Groups, and Pages APIs will require extensive permissions before developers can be approved.
The new safeguards are in place but will they be enough to keep users safe from another Facebook fail?
Do you think Facebook’s new steps will be enough? Do you think there has been too much trust lost? Let us know in the comments below.
