New Android Promo Metrics

Google is making it easier to generate good automated metrics on the effectiveness of app promotions.

Promo codes are a common way to motivate app sales and boost chart performance.

Until now, the ability to internally analyse the success of such promotions has been limited.

That’s about to get easier, as Google Play Billing can now tell you every time a promo code is redeemed.

How it works

Each time a sale takes place in the Play Store, Google can send a message to the developer. By aggregating these notes, you get the data you need for reports.

One part of the note defines the ‘purchase type’.

Previously, it only told you whether the purchase was a test transaction or a normal transaction. Now, there’s a third possibility: ‘Promo’.

Purchases that redeem a promo code will report back this new value, building another dimension into your data.

Backend back-and-forth

If you want these insights into your app promos performance, get your developer to tweak the code.

The process is straightforward, but technical, relying on Google Play’s Application programming interface (API). Once the change is made, the data will be sent right to your backend.
