Stat Attack: More users getting their News from Social

While the web seems awash with daily accusations of fake news, a recent study shows we’re actually getting our news from increasingly varied sources.

Read all about it

The Pew Research Centre found that over a quarter (26%) of US adults now get their news from two more social media sites. That's up from 18% last year, and 15% in 2013.

Facebook leads the way when it comes to news, with 45% of respondents going to the platform for their daily news digest. Significantly, half of this group get their news exclusively from Facebook.

More broadly, Pew found 20% of all Facebook users rely on at least three sources for their news.

Make up the numbers

Reddit (26%), YouTube (21%), and Twitter (18%) took the next three spots when it came to users who exclusively used one site for news.

Elsewhere, 50% of users across Instagram, Snapchat, LinkedIn, and WhatsApp get their news sources form at least three social sites.

There’s an interesting overlap between these sites, with new users of Instagram and Snapchat getting news for both platforms, and 30% of WhatsApp users getting their news from Snapchat and Instagram.

Close to half (47%) of users who rely on more than two news sources are aged 18 – 49 years.
