As Australians slowly adjust back to work mode a mixed bag of news and gossip occupied our thoughts and tweets this week.

Melbourne lived up to its sporting capital credentials by spitting out tennis hashtags faster than Nadal’s first service: #ausopen, #tennis and #Federer all featured prominently, with the hashtag frenzy only interrupted by Shane Warne’s mid-week altercation with #cyclists.

#SOPA’s effect was felt around the country (and globe), and with Wikipedia going dark for 24 hours the #factswithoutwikipedia hashtag kept the flame of knowledge burning with enlightening revelations like the fact that ferrets are in fact a legume and PJ Harvey is short for Pyjamas.

In other news @mark_wahlberg caused waves with the modest boast that he could have single-handedly stopped 9-11, while @rickygervais caused a worldwide ripple of giggles as host of #goldenglobes.
