Brisbane’s big digital future

Brisbane is known for many things: its climate, Expo 88, a laid-back pace, XXXX beer and rugby. If a new report is anything to go by, digital hub will soon be added to the list.

This week the Brisbane City Council released Digital Brisbane: Strategy for a Digital Drive Economy. The report outlined the strategy the city is following to ensure it's well positioned to take advantage of the growing online economy, currently valued at $20 trillion.

Here are some of the key ways Brisbane is future-proofing its economy.

Five year plan

The Digital Brisbane strategy outlines a series of five-year targets.

These include doubling the number of Brisbane firms selling products and services online, a 35 per cent improvement in productivity growth through digital technology and support for local digital start-up companies.

A virtual helping hand

A key part of the strategy is the Digital Business Power-up program, which will help over 4000 SMEs become more digital savvy through face-to-face training and information forums.

This training will aim to match SMEs with digital service providers that will help integrate their digital and business strategies. In addition, the training will target a further 30,000 people via online training tools.

Start up assistance

In a bid to encourage more innovative and online businesses, Brisbane will provide grants for start ups with digital potential.

Support will come in the form of scholarships, support programs and connecting start ups with potential mentors and angel investors.

Improved public experience

The strategy isn’t just for businesses. Digital Brisbane aims to improve the online experience for residents and visitors to the Queensland capital.

Initiatives include increased broadband coverage and speed across the city, and training young Queenslanders to digitally code via a program run through the city’s libraries.
