While Groupon is widely regarded as an online depository of deals, a recent move indicates the company sees more more than coupons in its future.
Case in point: the quiet launch of Groupon Stores.
Group think
Groupon Stores is a new service that allows retailers (and virtually any brand) to establish a Groupon storefront to promote and sell their products.
While Groupon Stores is still in beta, it's rumoured that to secure a listing retailers must offer products at least 5% cheaper than elsewhere on the web. For its trouble Groupon will reportedly take a 15% cut of all sales.
First shot?
The move marks Groupon's move towards becoming an online retail space.
In 2014 the company gave brands the ability to appear on their website, even if they didn't have a current deal active. And last year Goods accounted for 56% of Groupon's revenue, or US$1.8 billion.
While Groupon might not be in a position to challenge the dominance of Amazon and eBay, there might be much appeal for retailers wanting to reach some of the brand's 41 million active customers.
