A gaggle of reporters recently assembled at Facebook’s new San Francisco office to better understand the Instagram feed ranking algorithm.
Secret recipe
Back in July of 2016, users were missing 70% of all posts and as many as 50% of their friend’s, but Instagram’s new algorithm has brought millions to the app.
Despite the negativity of the old posting system, Instagram has since added more than 800 million users, with 90% of friends posts being seen.
Instagram has revealed its secret sauce has three main ingredients: Interest, Recency, Relationship.
Building a better experience
The new algorithm provides personalised feeds based on how users interact with other accounts, based on past behaviour by predicting which posts are of interest, how recently it was posted, and your connection to that user.
But that’s not all. The app also takes into account your frequency of use, how many users you are following, and how much time you spend in app.
All these factors provide Instagram with a better personalised game plan of what posts are of interest to you.
What are your thoughts on the algorithm details? Do you remember a less effective Instagram? Let us know what you think in the comments below.
