Snapchat stays away from Live Broadcasting

The recent Winter Olympics might provide an insight in Snapchat's future plans for broadcasting. Namely, not much in the way of personal live strearming.

Olympic samples

Snapchat streamed segments of NBC’s Live Olympic coverage as a new feature, entering into the realm of affiliated broadcasting but users could not generate live content.

Snap Inc. believes users are after cultural relevance but not necessarily in long format. Snapchat Live broadcast just the highlights of large events.

In future rather than broadcasting an entire award show, like the Oscars for example, Snapchat may just air the award for Best Picture. The short-form live content is some of the first to rival Facebook’s efforts.

Live shoots for efficiency

Snapchat’s proprietary Live video player will preview full horizontal streams in the bottom corner of the screen. Users can then tap which vertical slice to play.

Notifications will be implemented to announce new content as well, so users can opt for staying informed on certain sports, events, and entertainment.

Two Snap Shows have been produced by NBC Sports complete with custom context cards, Olympic schedules, and medal counts. The move signals an evolution for Snap Inc. becoming a bit more network than social.
