Social Media Fail: Australian Rugby League

History repeats itself, and so to do social media fails.

Back in June we reported on the fate of Josh Bootsma, the first AFL player to be fired for indiscretions on social media.

Now ARL player Todd Carney has been sacked over a social scandal.

Twitter take down

A fortnight ago Carney, who until recently played for the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks, was out celebrating with friends at a bar.

One thing led to another and somehow Carney was coerced into posing for a NSFW picture in the establishment's bathroom. The photo appears to show the player urinating into his mouth.

For those unaware, the official term for this pose is “bubbling”.

Bubbling over

That “bubbling” photo soon found its way onto Twitter, which then went global and was even featured on the Perez Hilton website.

The Cronulla Sharks weren't impressed with their player's off-field performance and sacked Carney, ending his lucrative $3 million contract.

Liquid ideas

This wasn't Carney's first strike. The Sharks revealed he had received two prior warnings about poor behaviour.

There are echoes of this incident in the Jake Bootsma case – who had faced prior disciplinary actions before being fired after sending allegedly explicit images to a teenage girl on Snapchat.

In both cases the clubs face a barrage of bad publicity and potentially pricey contract costs, all for something that could have been avoided with a little common sense.
