Twitter rolls out interactive images

Twitter has just announced a new feature that lets users post interactive images on their timelines.

Picture perfect

Users can now upload images powered by ThingLink, the Finnish startup that embeds images with links to digital content.

These data-rich images can now be published on Twitter using Twitter Cards, the service that allows publishers to embed code into tweets.

Discoverable content

ThingLink's images contain tags that when highlighted lead to discoverable content such as YouTube channels, Facebook profiles, music clips, online stores and special offers.

This test tweet from ThingLink CMO Neil Vineberg shows how the system works.

Keeping it in the house

Twitter has recently been moving to clamp down on third-party apps and keep content within its ecosystem.

By making its platform a single jumping off point for multiple forms of promotion, Twitter is moving its offering for marketers beyond 140 characters.
