Facebook and Google have never been what you'd call close. These digital superpowers have warily circled each other for years, like prize fighters sizing the other up for weaknesses.
Now it looks like Facebook is preparing to land a body blow on its old adversary.
Search strife
According to a report in Bloomberg, Facebook is testing a way for users to search for Facebook posts using keywords. A select group of Facebook users on mobile now have the ability to search for previous posts from their friends.
Currently there is no more information about the feature, or whether it will migrate to desktop.
Where there's smoke…
Facebook has long coveted Google's hold over search. In the past the social network has rolled out features like Graph Search, which allows users to find content via recommendations from friends.
Graph Search is still a work in progress, but if Facebook can find a way of easily accessing the 1 trillion posts and status updates it has accumulated over the past decade, it would be the equivalent of discovering Tutankhamen's Tomb for marketers.
And by extension, a clear threat to Google's undisputed domination of search.
Stay tuned.
