Yahoo has announced that it will now be adding content from Twitter to its news stream on yahoo.com.
Tweet that
Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer broke the news in a blog post, writing that the move reflects Twitter's increasing position as the place for breaking news.
“Updates direct from politicians, celebrities, media outlets, and other publishers have become an important source of real-time news and information. 140 characters can connect athletes with their fans, capture live chatter from the red carpet, and inspire global debate,” wrote Mayer.
Tailored feeds
Users visiting the Yahoo home page will now see targeted tweets integrated into Yahoo news stories. For example, if a user is looking up sports results, tweets from that sporting club or relevant hashtag will be displayed.
The feature could potentially be used in Twitter ad campaigns to capitalise on certain hashtags and news events.
The move is the latest in a series of updates from Yahoo since Mayer took over as CEO. In February Yahoo made its homepage more customisable and introduced news streams, while earlier this month the company announced new advertising models aimed at boosting engagement.
Integrated tweets will be available to US desktop and mobile users this week. If successful expect a global roll out to follow.
