YouTube mobile update incurs fan wrath

YouTube commenters have never been known as retiring types.

Now the platform has earned their ire with an update to its iOS app that's proving poison at the box office. Or at least the app store.

Mobile rage

The latest YouTube iOS app update seems innocent enough on paper. It sports Google's ubiquitous 'material' design and includes new editing features.

However a significant number of users didn't appreciate the new layout and lack of functionality with new iOS 9 features. So much so that they've taken to bombarding the App Store with one-star reviews.

Thumbs Down

Many of the complaints relate to the new prominent red bar at the top of the app, and how it is now more difficult to access subscriptions. This might be a cause for concern for YouTube, as users may be less inclined to follow content creators.

Below is a sample of the reviews.

"The functionality is horrible, the layout is horrible, the crashing is more constant, and i cant scroll through my subscriptions while watching a video anymore. "

"This update is garbage! Red and White? That hurts my eyes in a way indescribable."

Change of tune?

YouTube may have shot itself in the foot somewhat by forcing users to update to the new design, rather than making it optional.

You can bet someone at YouTube will be watching engagement stats with the new design. If it drops off disgruntled users might get some of their concerns addressed.

Until then, the rest of us will have to console ourselves up with Grumpy Cat.
