YouTube stars bigger than mainstream celebs

We all know YouTube is huge, but a new study shows that being famous on YouTube is kind of a big deal.

New video stars

A new survey from Variety reveals that the most influential celebrities for US teens are all YouTube stars, leaving traditional celebs in the virtual dust.

Comedy dominated the results, with comedy duo Smoosh the surprise number one hit. In second place came another comedy duo the Fine Bros, followed by Swedish videogamer PewDiePie.

Making up fourth and fifth spots were comedian/rapper KSI and actor/comedian Ryan Higa.

Old school

The late actor Paul Walker was the top traditional celebrity to make the list, coming in at sixth spot. Walker was followed by Jennifer Lawrence and Katy Perry.

Digital driver

Variety asked 1500 respondents a range of questions including the influencers' approachability, authenticity and overall appeal.

The survey revealed that YouTube stars displayed traits more appealing to teen audiences including authenticity and intelligence.

It also found teen users feel they have more intimate relationships with YouTube stars, compared to the carefully choreographed appearances from their mainstream counterparts.

However the findings come with a warning: YouTube stars seeking more mainstream fame risk becoming ostracised by teen users, who value their alternative appeal.
