Skype has released an update to its desktop application that gives users the ability to digitally send gift cards.
Birthday wishes
From today, when users receive a birthday notification via Skype they can send the birthday boy or girl call credits.
The credit comes in the form of a card that can be customised with a personal message.
No time like the present
The new eGifting feature is available for Mac and Windows users, while Skype also added a new design for PC users.
Skype for Windows has a new toolbar than brings all of Skype's core actions in one location. Home, Calling Phones, Creating Groups and Adding Contacts are al now arranged above the contact list.
Gift cards gaining ground
The update comes shortly after Facebook launched its own Gift Card earlier this month.
Microsoft-owned Skype now has over 45 million concurrent users, an increase over 70 per cent since the beginning of 2012.
As its user base has grown Skype has experimented with new features and monetising options, including Conversation Ads.
