Facebook has partnered with Australian publishers to test a new “breaking news” feature that uses a mark of authentication.
Trusted source
The social media behemoth has started trials on a new label system that indicates whether a news source is legitimate.
Facebook had already started testing on the new system with US publishers for a select group of national and local news agencies using their ‘Breaking news’ tag.
The addition doesn’t impact news algorithms that rank news feed content, but it has produced a 4% uptick in click-through rates, along with a 7% boost in Likes, and 11% in sharing.
Across the pond
In Australia, Facebook is working with ABC News, News.com.au, and Nine News to test their new tag and working with Seven News and the Sydney Morning Herald to test a new ‘storylines’ feature.
‘Story lines’ are meant to allow users to actively follow developing stories and now users can use the alerting mechanism to follow updates in real-time.
Along with ‘Instant Articles,’ ‘Subscription Tests,’ ‘Audience Network,’ and ‘Ad Breaks’ Facebook seems to really be trying to make good on their promise for better news and more transparency.
Do you think Facebook is about to see an upswing in user trust? Have you been following any of their ‘Breaking news’ tags? We want to know in our comments below.
