Facebook continues to gain momentum in reach but YouTube remains the most watched online video platform in the world.
YouTube takes the lead
A sizeable gap has been growing between the world’s favourite steaming site and social media platform. According to a new report from Ampere Analysis, Facebook is now ranked second for online video viewership.
Throughout 14 countries monitored by Ampere’s barometer, YouTube is bringing in 68.7% of internet users on a monthly basis, doubling Facebook’s 32.8%.
The runners-up are Netflix in third place with 28.8% of viewers, followed by Instagram (15.9%), Snapchat (9.2%), and Amazon Instant Video (8.8%).
Demographics play key role
Conducted in the third quarter of 2017, the report surveyed 28,000 users across Australia, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Saudi Arabia, Spain, and Turkey.
Instagram and Snapchat users were made up of people under 35 years, while Netflix and Amazon are favoured amongst 25-34 year-olds.
Though the report is not globally exhaustive and doesn’t account for viewing duration, it does show growing trends with Facebook showing favourable numbers through their relatively new video content.
