Messenger Lite goes global

Facebook has expanded the launch of Messenger light for North American and UK networks.

An app for all nations

Previously developed as a data-friendly app for developing countries with poor bandwidth, Facebook is making Messenger Lite available to developed countries as well.

The leaner app is now a cost-effective option for more frugal messenger users on Android devices, with no word yet as to if iOS will have access in the future.

Messenger Lite has officially been brought to Canada, Ireland, the UK, and US as a result of its success in countries where less data consumption was a necessity.

Leaner and faster

Messenger Lite is made possible by removing luxury features like Messenger Day and selfie lenses, while keeping the core functionality and text based messaging.

Since Messenger Lite’s release back in October 2016, the leaner app has been downloaded an impressive 47 million times, with Brazil and India leading the charge.

The expansion of the app to more developed countries is a bid to attract data-conscious teens, which is a necessary move in order for Messenger to grow beyond its existing 1.3 billion users.

If Messenger can keep users on their app, they could potentially engage more with other apps within the Facebook family.

What’s your favourite messenger app? Would you be inclined to use a leaner Messenger? Give us your thoughts in the comments below.
