Facebook and iOS partner up

Facebook is bracing for an increase in active users when Apple’s new iOS 6 software goes live on September 19.

iOS 6 will be available on the new iPhone 5, announced this week, as well as the older 3GS, 4 and 4S iterations, the iPad 2 and 3, and some iPod touch models.

The update brings a device-wide, single login for complete Facebook integration enabling users to check-in or share photos and links from almost anywhere in their phone.

Twitter saw a 25 per cent increase in monthly signups late last year after it was built into iOS 5, and the popular social network will be integrated into iOS 6 alongside Facebook.

Android, a competitor to iOS, allows apps to share to any social networks installed on a device without special agreements, highlighting how elusive it is for Facebook to enter Apple’s system.

Going mobile, going forward

Facebook co-founder, chairman and CEO Mark Zuckerberg spoke at TechCrunch’s Disrupt conference this week and plugged the mobile sphere.

“A lot more people have phones than computers, and mobile users are more likely to be daily active users,” he said.

Zuckerberg added that Facebook’s mobile apps’ usage is more than double their website traffic, and as a result there is greater consumption and sharing.

Bonus for users and advertisers

Facebook will see the iOS integration in two close-knit ways, one being the convenience factor for users, and the other in the hope for more user interaction.

Understanding that so many users are primarily active on their mobile devices, the social network has made it easier to push Sponsored Stories and advertisements to news feeds, recently updating its iOS app and aiming to do the same for Android soon.
