Amazon is many things to many people, but did you know it also owns the world's most profitable cloud services company?
Beam me up
Amazon Web Services (AWS) launched a decade ago, initially as the cloud computing arm of Amazon.com.
Today AWS has expanded its operations globally to become the largest cloud infrastructure company on the planet.
To put this in perspective, AWS commands 30% of the cloud computing market, making it larger than the cloud offerings from Microsoft, IBM, and Google combined.
Cloud talk
AWS is now worth more than US$10 billion, and recently posted a 57% year-on-year growth.
While Google and Facebook often steal the headlines, Amazon has the infrastructure to do some serious heavy hitting. And it's ambitious.
Far from its origins as an online book seller, Amazon now dabbles in everything from video content creation to expert reviews and drone delivery.
Which means more options for consumers, and marketers by extension.
The lesson here: pay attention to updates from the (semi) sleeping giant soon.
