Instagram overtook Twitter for daily active mobile users in August, according to comScore's Mobile Metrix 2.0 data provided to Mashable.
The photo-sharing app accounted for 400,000 more active mobile users with 7.3 million, compared to 6.9m Twitter users in August.
Rapid growth of Instagram
Instagram has experienced unprecedented growth over the past six months, surging from 886,000 active mobile users in March – a massive 724.2 per cent increase.
Instagram versus Twitter
Twitter had less daily mobile active users in August, but did have more 29m unique visitors versus Instagram's 21m.
Users also spent an average of 87.1 minutes more on Instagram.
While Instagram had more active daily users on mobile in August, Twitter continues to grow and amassed 5.5m daily mobile visitors in March and 6.9m in August, an increase of 24.2 per cent.
Image of success
The challenge for Facebook, which purchased Instagram earlier this year for US$1 billion, will be monetising its newest acquisition without alienating Instagrams' growing fanbase.
