A leaked report suggests that Facebook is considering monestising its super popular app Messenger.
Get the message?
The report, first mentioned in Tech Crunch, indicates that ads are en route to Messenger.
However the ads will differ from those currently in place on Facebook, and only pop up in message threads with brands.
To keep the process somewhat unobtrusive, brands can obly deliver ads to users who have already contacted them via Messenger.
Tech Crunch says Facebook is also planning to provide brands with a personalized URL that can be used to communicate with customers.
Big business
Messenger is one of the largest messaging apps, with close to 1 billion users.
That’s potentially a lot of revenue for Facebook, but managing the balance so ads don’t impact the usability of the app may take some tweaking.
However as the gradual roll out of ads on Instagram shows, Facebook has the resources to play the long game.
Expect to hear more about Messenger ads in the second quarter of 2016.
