Reddit’s growing influence in AI search is creating an increasingly valuable marketing signal, and an equally obvious incentive to manipulate it.
The platform has become an important source for AI-generated answers involving recommendations, comparisons, opinions and first-hand experiences. Discussions that were once primarily valuable to people browsing Reddit can now potentially influence how products and brands are represented across ChatGPT, Google and other AI services.
Reddit is responding by strengthening its systems for detecting spam, fake engagement and coordinated manipulation, including greater use of AI to identify patterns of activity that conventional moderation tools can miss.
The problem is hardly new to digital marketing. Whenever a signal starts influencing visibility, attempts to manufacture that signal tend to follow.
AI search may now be creating the next version.
Reddit Recommendations Carry Wider Influence
Reddit has particular value because much of its content looks very different from conventional marketing.
Someone asking which running shoes to buy, which CRM is worth considering or whether a particular hotel lives up to its reviews can find detailed discussions from people claiming first-hand experience.
AI systems can draw on those conversations when constructing their own answers.
Semrush research analysing 217,000 prompts found Reddit appearing in 13% of ChatGPT Search responses and 9% of Google AI Mode responses within its dataset. The study identified almost 250,000 Reddit URLs cited or mentioned across the AI platforms analysed.
For brands, visibility within those conversations can therefore travel considerably further than Reddit itself.
There is nothing inherently questionable about wanting to improve that visibility.
Brands should understand where they are being discussed, correct inaccurate information where appropriate and participate genuinely in communities where they can contribute something useful. Strong products, customer experiences, communications and reputation should also naturally generate discussion elsewhere online.
The problem starts when brands try to manufacture what looks like independent endorsement.
If an apparently authentic recommendation can help influence an AI-generated answer, the commercial value of producing more apparently authentic recommendations increases.
AI Search Risks Repeating SEO’s Mistakes
Search marketing has been through versions of the same cycle several times.
Backlinks became important to Google rankings and eventually spawned an industry dedicated to manufacturing them. Keywords produced pages written for algorithms rather than readers. Reviews became important to visibility and purchasing decisions, followed predictably by fake reviews.
Generative search creates a new collection of signals that marketers are trying to understand.
Brand mentions, citations, reviews, media coverage, community discussions and recommendations can all potentially contribute to how AI systems understand and represent an organisation.
Optimising that information environment is perfectly legitimate.
Artificially manufacturing it is different.
Reddit is particularly sensitive because the platform derives much of its value from the perceived independence of its conversations. A business recommending its own product on its website is clearly marketing. Someone apparently recommending the same product based on personal experience inside a Reddit community carries a different form of credibility.
Once businesses start disguising the former as the latter, the signal becomes considerably less trustworthy.
Reddit Is Fighting Back
Reddit says its upgraded systems are already blocking around 23 million spam views every day, catching approximately 25,000 additional spam posts and comments and revoking almost two million inauthentic votes daily.
According to the company, user exposure to spam fell by around 20% between January and March 2026.
Large language models are increasingly being used alongside Reddit’s existing detection systems to identify subtler patterns of coordinated behaviour, fake activity and artificial hype.
AI is therefore operating on both sides of the problem.
Generative AI is helping make Reddit conversations more commercially valuable, while Reddit is using AI to identify attempts to manipulate those conversations.
Protecting that credibility matters to Reddit’s own business as much as it matters to users.
Its usefulness to advertisers, search engines and AI platforms depends heavily on the idea that its communities contain genuine discussion rather than marketing disguised as recommendation.
Reddit Is Having Its Moment
Reddit is rightly enjoying a period in the sun as marketers reconsider where visibility comes from in an AI-driven discovery environment.
Its enormous archive of human discussion gives AI systems access to opinions and experiences that are difficult to reproduce through company websites or conventional publisher content alone.
However, some of the broader narrative around Reddit dominating AI search needs qualification.
There is no single source hierarchy governing generative search.
Citation patterns can change by platform, industry, query type, funnel stage, geography and language. Freshness can change them again. Someone looking for a product recommendation may encounter Reddit and review sites, while a regulatory question could rely heavily on government sources. Current affairs may favour publishers, while professional or B2B queries can produce an entirely different mix.
Patterns can also move quickly as AI products change their retrieval systems.
LinkedIn offers a useful example. Profound found LinkedIn’s presence among ChatGPT citations increased sharply between late 2025 and early 2026. In its analysis of professional queries across six AI platforms, LinkedIn subsequently emerged as the most-cited domain.
LinkedIn had previously appeared relatively unimportant in much of the conversation around AI visibility.
Within a matter of months, that changed.
Reddit’s influence is therefore better understood as concentrated rather than universal. It appears particularly relevant where people are looking for recommendations, comparison, opinion and lived experience.
Those also happen to be commercially important questions, which helps explain the growing interest in influencing what Reddit contains.
AI Visibility Is Becoming More Distributed
The danger for marketers is turning Reddit into the latest optimisation craze.
A few years ago every brand supposedly needed a TikTok strategy. More recently the answer became Reddit because AI platforms were citing it heavily. LinkedIn’s recent rise provides a useful reminder of how quickly simplistic advice can age.
AI visibility is unlikely to be won through a single platform.
Company websites remain important because they provide detailed first-party information. Publishers and digital PR create independent authority. Reviews provide customer evidence. YouTube can supply demonstrations and expertise. LinkedIn contributes professional and organisational signals. Reddit and other communities provide conversations and lived experience.
Different combinations can matter at different points in a customer journey.
Analyse Your Own Citation Environment
For marketing and communications teams, the more useful approach is to analyse their own category rather than follow whichever platform happens to be fashionable.
Tools such as Profound, Peec AI and similar AI visibility platforms can help organisations examine the prompts that matter within their market, identify which sources are influencing answers and understand how citation patterns differ across products and AI platforms.
That analysis can produce a very different picture from the industry average.
A B2B technology company may find LinkedIn, trade media and its own website doing most of the work. A consumer brand may see Reddit, YouTube, reviews and retailers appearing more frequently. Another organisation may discover that a handful of specialist publishers carry disproportionate influence across the questions that matter commercially.
The useful question is therefore not whether Reddit is important.
It is where Reddit sits within the information ecosystem for a particular market, and which other sources are actually shaping the answers customers receive.
From there, teams can make more informed decisions about where to invest in content, digital PR, community participation, reviews, partnerships and owned information.
Reddit should increasingly form part of that analysis, particularly for categories where recommendations and customer experiences influence purchasing decisions.
Trying to manufacture those conversations is a considerably shakier strategy.
Reddit’s current value comes largely from the fact that people, and increasingly AI systems, regard its discussions as something different from brand-controlled marketing.
The harder marketers try to fake that independence, the more valuable genuinely independent reputation becomes.
