Social Fail: The Dignity Project

The Dignity Project is a UK-based charity dedicated to providing education and opportunities for children and communities in East Africa.

It's a well regarded organisation that has done much good work in the past 15 years. However all that was threatened when a hacker caused the charity to inadvertently land in social strife.

JK Rowling

Harry Potter author JK Rowling recently donated 1 million pounds to Better Together, a campaign that supports keeping Scotland in the UK.

Soon after the donation became public the following tweet appeared on The Dignity Project's Facebook and Twitter accounts.

“What a #bitch after we gave her shelter in our city as a single mum.”

Hogwarts or hogwash?

It turns out the Facebook and Twitter accounts of The Dignity Project had been hacked, and soon enough the charity posted a message on its website explaining the security leak.

The hacker was able to gain access to the social sites via a email account set up by the late sister of the Chairman of The Dignity Project, an account long considered dormant.

Both The Dignity Project's Facebook and Twitter accounts have since been suspended.

Takeaways

In a month where hacker's have gained access to the personal photos of many celebrities, this episode is a reminder that all brands must be up to speed on their social security.

Ignore this simple advice and risk having your own muggle moment on social.
