Twitter test opens up character limit

Change keeps coming to Twitter, with the company finally testing its extended replies system.

Freedom

Announced earlier in 2016, Twitter has stopped counting @mentions in replies as part of the 140-character limit.

The move gives users extra room to continue discussions, especially as more users join a conversation.

It is, however, only being tested with a small number of users in the official Twitter apps for iOS and Android, though the longer tweets will appear as normal elsewhere.

Hope for the future

Having given the 140-character limit a boost in September by excluding links to photos, GIFs and quote tweets, Twitter is committed to its shake-up.

It remains to be seen when Twitter will expand its test beyond the apps or to more users.
