GIPHY wants to know: how dank is that meme?

GIPHY is launching a new feature specifically designed to let users know how much buzz a brand new meme is carrying.

Know your memes

The new feature introduces Gif view counts so you can quantify just how popular a given meme is and gauge what kind of reaction you can expect.

Every time a GIPHY Gif is sent and opened, the company counts that as a single view, regardless of how many sequential loops the Gif performs.

The idea is to provide a bit of background regarding memes both new and old as they are used in different situations.

Putting a number to pop culture capital

Ever wonder how many views James Harden’s rolling eye Gif garnered? 57 million. How about Brock Lesner laughing at his defeated WWE opponent? 37 million.

Curious about Rihanna’s half dab via MTV? A subtle 14 million views. In a world of metrics, the new Gif counter is more than just a gimmick.

On one hand, it’s nice to know what meme has staying power within a social conversation, but for advertisers looking to use the medium to further a brand, this becomes a valuable metric.
